Well, we are finally recovered from the awesome St. Croix Food and Wine Experience 2011! And what a week it was! This event keeps getting better every year, and it’s a wonderful time for the restaurateurs, chefs, servers, bartenders, and purveyors of St. Croix to do what they do best. And us lucky local foodies get to reap the benefits. The Taste of St. Croix has always been the ultimate event of the week, but this year there was also so much more to do and experience throughout the whole week. For a visiting foodie, this is THE week to be on St. Croix. Renowned celebrity chefs prepare gourmet feasts for Cork and Fork Wine Dinners, compete in an Iron Chef style Food Fight on the beach at Eat@Cane Bay, judge the winning eats at Taste, and get to know our island culinary scene. All benefiting the St. Croix Foundation, so it’s for a good cause too! This year’s theme for the Food and Wine Experience was celebrating women in the culinary world. Since the Food and Wine Experience was founded by two women, Katharine Pugliese and Kelly Odom, they were inspired to invite female celebrity chefs such as Top Chef contestant Tiffany Derry, Ana Sortum, and Anita Lo to St. Croix.

Taste of St. Croix was a huge success this year, showcasing the finest culinary offerings from St. Croix, whether it’s traditional Rastafarian Ital food, to local barbecue, to the highest of fine dining, to farm fresh offerings from our local farmers. Wine purveyors poured sips from winemakers around the world, and every restaurant was ready to compete with their best dishes on display. Many longtime participants held onto their award winning spots, while newcomers also made a splash with the judges. Tavern 1844 won Best Entree with their absolutely decadent burger: Wagyu beef topped with lobster, bacon, arugala, tomato and garlic aioli! How’s that for a fine dining take on the humble hamburger? Sweetface Chocolate, another newcomer, tied for first place with their local basil and Cruzan Blackstrap rum infused organic dark chocolate, featuring the best ingredients St. Croix has to offer. There were lots of other delicious bites and sips showcasing the creativity of St. Croix’s culinary leaders. St. Croix Libation Society won best beverage with a traditional daiquiri with coconut and clarified lime juice, and the best cotton candy I’ve had: made with coconut bitters on a sugar cane stick! Yum!

I also tasted delicious local free range lamb ragu from Cultured Pelican, braised pork and gnocchi from Restaurant Bacchus, paella from Salud!, and an absolutely delicious vegan coconut mushroom bisque from Shanti Shawa’s Vital Ital. I didn’t get to try everything, but what I did have was absolutely great! Just means I have an excuse to get out and try more delicious bites from the awesome culinary offerings St. Croix has to offer.

Of course, it was all about the food and drink, but Crucians also come to party! The Divi Carina Bay Resort had perfect weather and the atmosphere was lively as everyone enjoyed themselves around the pool and on the beach. I heard that not one, but two wedding parties had made the trip to St. Croix to enjoy their week during this foodie fest. In fact, one groom had flown all the way from Afghanistan! I’m sure they were not disappointed. Live music kept the party going, and the after party upstairs was rocking into the night. All in all, it was yet another Taste of St. Croix to remember.

We mentioned the Good Hope School’s Caribbean Fine Art Exhibit in our 5 Can’t Miss February Events post, but wanted to pay a little more attention to this wonderful long-standing tradition of supporting and showcasing the finest local artists. Anyone who has been to St. Croix knows there is a thriving local art scene, and we are truly lucky to have so many fine artists working in a variety of mediums, and so many wonderful places to show their work.

In addition to the monthly Art Thursday art walks around all the galleries in Christiansted, there are frequent art shows at the Caribbean Museum Center, Walsh Metal Works Gallery and other special events such as this one. The Good Hope Caribbean Fine Art Exhibit is held in the Campus Center and has been attracting a wide array of talent and art fans for 24 years, and this year is no exception. This opportunity to enjoy some local art is also for a great cause, as it benefits the Good Hope Scholarship Fund. As a GHS alum myself, I can attest to what a wonderful place it is to go to school, and what a nurturing environment it is for students of all kinds.

One of this year’s featured artists is Trudi Gilliam who has been participating in the Good Hope Caribbean Fine Art Exhibit for 23 out of the past 24 years. The image used at the top of this post is one of Trudi’s copper pieces, which is available on her website trudigilliam.com. It’s a great opportunity to see new works from favorite artists and so generous of them to donate their time and talent to a great cause.

Not only is it a great community event, but also a fun one! Kick off President’s Day weekend with the opening reception on Friday, February18th at 7 pm. Tickets are $30 and available for purchase at Good Hope, Polly’s at the Pier, Undercover Books and KICKS in Christiansted.

And if you’re curious about the fabulous poster design, it is by Latin American Artist Claudia de Ledebur, who has developed her style in her extensive travels and is returning to the Caribbean Fine Art Exhibit, having participated for several years.

It’s a fun event, for a great cause and with fabulous art! What more could you ask for? Check out their website for more information.

Can you believe February is already here? It really is one of the biggest months for events on St. Croix, with so many of our favorite annual events happening during this short month! Here’s a rundown of the big ones you should definitely check out, and don’t forget to hit up our event calendar and see what interests you. We try to keep it as current as possible with submissions from our advertisers, so if you are an advertiser, and have an event you would like to add, please do send us an email at info@gotostcroix.com.

Here are the can’t miss events to put on your TO DO list. Enjoy!

1. Jump Up! Valentine’s Day Jump Up is on Friday, February 11th. Come out to Christiansted for a block party night with music, mocko jumbies and great sales with all the stores open late. Score everything from a sweet treat for your Valentine at Steele’s Smokes and Sweets or up the ante with handcrafted jewelry from one of the fine jewelry stores in town, such as ib designs, Crucian Gold or Sonja’s. If you’re not shopping, and just enjoying the festivities, there will be lots of live entertainment and local food and products to enjoy!

2. Cabaret! Caribbean Community Theater is putting on a fantastic production of the Tony-award winning musical “Cabaret,” and I’m not just saying that because I’m in the show. Director Ruby Des Jardins is a second generation Crucian and has returned to the island to direct this musical. The story of love and loss in 1930s Weimar Berlin is told with an energetic cast and crew, fun choreography, and innovative puppetry and sets. This is a do not miss show, and will be playing every Friday and Saturday night during February at 8 pm, and one matinee on the 20th at 4 pm. Check out their website for ticket information and more!

3. The St. Croix Yacht Club Hospice Regatta! The annual sailing regatta is happening this weekend February 11th to 13th, and benefits the important work Continuum Care provides to those who need hospice care. It’s such a necessary service that they provide, and the sailing regatta to benefit them is a wonderful and fun way to be involved. I love that the winning prize is the skipper’s weight in Cruzan Rum! Too funny. The Yacht Club will host the Cruzan Rum party on Saturday night and the awards ceremony and festivities will happen on Sunday afternoon. Oh yeah, and there’s a little sailing in between all the partying.

4. The Good Hope School Fine Art Show! This annual art show showcases the finest local artists and will be going up February 18th through 21st, with an opening reception on February 18th at 7 pm, tickets available at Kicks, Polly’s at the Pier, Undercover Books and Good Hope School.

5. AGRIFEST! Or the Ag Fair, as it is commonly called. This annual favorite brings people from all over the territory to experience the bounty of St. Croix’s agricultural scene. In addition to the plants and animals on display, there’s delicious local food to taste, locally made products to purchase, cute animals to pet, and live music and entertainment. It’s a lot of fun and a wonderful way to celebrate the beauty and resources of our island and its culture. This year is the 40th anniversary and it’s sure to be unforgettable! Check out their website for more details.

There you go! 5 can’t miss events in February! There’s lots of other fun stuff on our event calendar so check that out as well and let us know if we missed something!

Everyone has a different idea of what kicks off the holiday season. Is it Thanksgiving? Christmas Spoken Here at the Botanical Gardens? Or is it the annual Christmas Boat Parade in St. Croix’s Christiansted Harbor? St. Croix’s boats will be parading their finest holiday gear this Saturday evening, decked out in lights, decorations, revelers, Santas and even Mocko Jumbies!

It’s a fun time down on the boardwalk and GotoStCroix.com’s webcam makes it all the more fun. If you’re lucky enough to attend the festivities, we suggest calling your friends in the frigid North from the webcam location at RumRunners on the boardwalk and letting them peek in on the action. Or, if you’re missing the Boat Parade this year and you’re elsewhere, watch all the fun on our Harbor Cam, drink a Heineken or a rum punch and feel like you’re in the middle of the action!

Tomorrow night, 6 pm: Click onto our webcam to watch the Boat Parade!

Before the Boat Parade starts, head into Christiansted early to do some holiday shopping and enjoy treats provided by the CRRA at the Cookie Crawl. Participating shops will have treats like cookies and fudge out for shoppers, so cruise around to your favorite places and enjoy cookies while you shop. There are going to be some great shopping specials and deals and even caroling in the streets tool.

After the parade, two very cool new art studios will be having openings in Christiansted. Bassin Fine Art Gallery comes to you from the owners of D&D Studio, and will feature a variety of fine art and photography. Machete Machete Artist Studio also opens its doors with a contemporary art show featuring local and stateside artists. Both are great options for after the Boat Parade!

Other stuff going on this weekend: Cultured Pelican has guest chef Dave Vargas in the kitchen all weekend, serving up gourmet vegan and vegetarian specials Friday night, a wine dinner Saturday night and service industry night on Sunday. Definitely call to make a reservation and enjoy Dave’s unique and delicious food: (340) 773-3333.

John Eddie rocks the house at Club 54 on Saturday night and then takes his country tunes to Divi Carina Bay on Sunday afternoon. Is there any better way to cap off a weekend than with some live music and poolside scenery? Don’t think so!

Whew! I’m exhausted just thinking about all this! But it’s going to be a fun weekend! See you out there! Don’t forget to check our calendar for all the details!

This is the perfect holiday gift for the island-lover in your life and a beautiful way to keep a little slice of St. Croix in your home or office.

We specifically chose Frederiksted for our first poster, to celebrate the fact that St. Croix will host the most cruise ships we have seen in our port in 10 years this season. It’s going to be a great year for Frederiksted, and all of the businesses that benefit from cruise ship traffic– it’s something to commemorate! During the design process, we were inspired by vintage destination posters that make travel seem adventurous, glamorous and fun, and we think that St. Croix possesses this nostalgic charm in a lot of ways.

Order your St. Croix Poster today! It’s a wonderful, easy and affordable gift that will remind everyone of their favorite Caribbean jewel. Whether it’s for an island transplant missing home, an avid traveler or a corporate gift, this is a stylish and fun gift for everyone. Each poster is $20 each, with a $6 Priority USPS shipping charge to anywhere in the Virgin Islands or United States. For international and Express USPS shipping, the charge is $15. We’ll enclose your note with each shipment upon request.

We are also offering a subscription service for the full series of posters. We plan to do 12 in the series, and you’ll receive one per month, showcasing a beautiful favorite location on St. Croix. We can’t wait to roll the rest of them out!

Click here to order your poster. Holiday shopping just got simpler! We hope you and your loved ones enjoy the poster as much as we do.
