Facts
There won't be a test at the end of your vacation, but here are some interesting facts about the Island of St. Croix.
Geography
The US Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain which separates the Caribbean and Atlantic. St. Croix, the largest of the three Virgins, is 28 miles long and 7 miles wide. This intriguing jewel lies 17° 45' north latitude and 64° 45' west longitude and is considered to be one of the most beautiful resort areas in the Caribbean. We are on Atlantic Standard time, which makes us one hour ahead of Eastern Standard time in winter months when you set your clocks back one hour. Ruins of more than 100 sugar mills and great houses sporadically cover the island and offer an insight into the past and present culture of St. Croix. The fascination and allure of St. Croix belongs to its rolling hills, long stretches of white, sandy beaches, and an array of landscape from dry cactus in the east to a lush rain forest in the west.
Climate
AAHHH!! Warm! The sun shines year-round with an average temperature of 80° during the day and around 70° most evenings, summer being a little warmer. Trade winds coming from the East blow seductively across the island to keep the humidity low. When it rains, the showers are over in a few minutes. We average 50 inches of rain a year, with September and October being less dry than the winter months. During rainfall, rooftops not only serve as musical instruments, but a passageway to the cistern, where the water is collected. Water is scarce, so please use it sparingly.
Populace
Since 1960, the U.S. Virgin Islands have nearly tripled in population. Estimates put the figure at over 50,000 on St. Croix, 50,000 on St. Thomas and 4,000 on St. John. St. Croix has been ruled under many different flags and to this day, islanders represent many nationalities and backgrounds with the majority being of African descent. For details on the history of St. Croix, please see our history page.
The Natives
The natives of St. Croix are called Crucians, sometimes spelled "Cruzan". Cruzans are very friendly but are reserved people. Behavior that is loud and boisterous is often times frowned upon. A smile and a greeting such as "good evening" will surely help you fit in. Mostly everyone speaks English, however the Cruzans do have a slightly modified version of English, also called Cruzan. Linguistically, Cruzan can be defined as Creole and is spoken throughout the West Indies with accents varying from island to island. Cruzan, or Creole, was born during the slave trade and matured by influences of Portuguese, Danish, French, Dutch and English.
Tips
Take a minute to look over these helpful tips to make your St. Croix vacation go a bit smoother.
What To Bring And How To Wear It
Life here in the Caribbean is very laid back and relaxed. However, if you feel that you can not live with out your blow dryers, curling irons or electric razors, you'll be happy to know that an adapter is not necessary. Of course, you are going to want to bring your swimsuit, but please, bring something to wear over it when in public. Island dress is casual, but bathing suits, short shorts and shirts that are unbuttoned are usually frowned upon while walking around town or in stores. Cotton clothes are preferred to avoid overheating. Men usually do not wear ties or jackets and nobody bothers with rain coats. Hats and sunscreen are a must to protect you from the sun. Even if you tan easily, the sun will burn you if you're not prepared, ruining what could be your best vacation.
Communication With The Outside World
If you can't pull yourself away from the hustle and bustle of stateside life, St. Croix can accommodate you. Our local telephone calls from coin-operated phones are 25 cents for each five minutes. Our local area code has recently changed to 340. We are part of the U.S. Postal System with first class mail now costing 34 cents for the first ounce of a letter. Post cards can be sent for 21 cents. One-ounce International letters can be sent for 80 cents an international postcards now for 75 cents. On St. Croix we have six post offices to serve you. There are two in Christiansted, Gallows Bay, Kingshill, Sunny Isle, and Frederiksted. There is one internet cafe for you to check your email.

Photo Tips
St. Croix is a photographer's dream. From the lush rainforest of the west end to the dry cactus of St. Croix's east end and all the wonderful beaches in between, there are endless opportunities for stunning pictures. Here are a few tips to ensure that you can have great memories and photos to match. Because of the intense light, slower film like 100 or 200 ASA will be the most practical. For non-automatic exposure cameras, cut the exposure down a stop or two when at the beach since the water and sand will reflect a lot of the brightness. While at the beach, experiment with underwater photography. Many dive shops and water sports stores rent disposal and underwater cameras. Waterproof housing is also available for high quality equipment. For a clear image, 100 ASA film is recommended. A flash is also recommended for depths below 15 feet. One hour film development is available at several places on the island. I have found K-mart to be the least expensive. Others are Hughes Photo in Sunny Isle, and Rogers Photo off Rte.75. Be sure to mark the film as underwater so that the color printer can be adjusted.

DEMOGRAPHICS
1. What are the U.S. Virgin
Islands?
Also known as America's Paradise, the three main islands are St. Thomas, St.
Croix and St. John. All have very unique personalities. St. Thomas is the most
metropolitan of the three with shopping abound for the cruise ship passengers
that grace her shores every day. St. John is where the Virgin Islands National
Park is located. It is best known for pristine beaches and nature trails ideal
for hiking. St. Croix is a pleasant blend of the two. You can enjoy shopping,
dining, culture, history, nature and spectacular beaches for snorkeling and scuba
diving. There are also smaller surrounding cays that are part of the territory. Click
here to see a map of St. Croix.
2.
Where are the U.S. Virgin Islands?
Our islands are surrounded by the beautiful Caribbean Sea. St. Croix sits on
the 18th degree North latitude and 65th degree West longitude. We are part
of the larger Antilles Island chain which runs from near Florida to off the
coast of South America. In laymen's terms, we are about 1,200 miles southeast
of Miami.
3. What
is the population?
According to a July 2007 estimate from the CIA’s World Fact book, the
most recent count of Virgin Islanders totaled 108,448, with roughly 50 thousand
residents in St. Croix, 50 thousand residents in St. Thomas and the remainder
on St. John.
4. What language do the people speak? Are they friendly?
English is the primary spoken language, but there is a definite dialect, or
accent, that has been influenced by the French, Danish and Spanish. On St.
Croix, the locals, are known as "Crucians" and are very culturally
rooted. They are a proud people and have very proper manners. Be expected to
greet everyone with a Good Morning, Good Afternoon and Good Evening, or a simple
Good Day can be used at anytime. Although St. Croix is a warm, beautiful island
and most of you will want to walk around with minimal clothing due to the heat,
it is considered impolite and against the law to wear your bathing suits in
the main towns of business. Males and Females have to be covered on the top
and bottom when in public areas, like shops, restaurants and hotel lobbies.
5. Is
the American dollar accepted?
We quit bartering with shells and coconuts last week, so bring all the U.S.
Dollars you want to spend. Most places accept credit cards and travelers checks.
There are ATMs located around the island. Click here to see ATM
locations.
6. What
time zone do they fall under?
This is an easy one. Our island lies in the Atlantic Time zone, which means
we do not participate in Daylight Savings Time. During Spring and Summer we
are on the same time as the East Coast of the U.S. until they set the clocks
back for daylight savings, which makes us one hour ahead during the fall and
winter

WEATHER
1.
Typically - what is the weather like? Do you have seasons?
88 degrees, mostly sunny, 10% chance of rain.
This is the forecast most days in the Caribbean. BUT,
we know that the temperature does change, some days are rainy, and yes, some
days are hotter than others.
2.
When is the rainy season?
Rainy season runs from August through November, with November being
the rainiest. Showers can occur at any time, but most occur before sunrise. Showers that
occur during the day are usually just passing and should not interfere with
your outdoor plans, for the most part.
3. What
are the Christmas Winds?
This is the name given to the trade winds that cool our island beginning in
December and sometimes lasting until February, making our island very desirable
to those dealing with freezing temperatures in the north.
4. When is hurricane season?
Hurricane season runs from June 1 until November 30 with the peak of season
being between August and October. BUT, hurricanes can occur at any time during
the season. The last major hurricane to hit St. Croix was Hugo in 1989, and
since then, strict guide lines have been put in place to protect everybody's
safety. With hourly updates and hi-tech satellite imagery, hurricane don't
come without plenty of warning. Preparations are made well in advance of the
storm. For more information on St. Croix’s weather, please

DOCUMENTS
NEEDED FOR TRAVEL
1. Do I need a passport?
If you are a United States citizen: NO!! NO!! NO!! It is always recommended
that you travel with your passport, as it is the easiest document to present
anywhere you go. Airline and security agents at all U.S. airports will expect
it from all travelers. However, because St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John
are a United States territory, it is NOT REQUIRED that you have a passport
when traveling here. If you have a valid passport, bring it with you.
If you are not a U.S.
Citizen, then a Passport issued by your country of origin is required
for entry.
2. What do I need to travel to the USVI? Drivers
license? Birth certificate?
If you or someone you are traveling with do not have a passport, it is required
that you present a government issued identification (Drivers License, ID card)
as well as an original copy of your birth certificate (with a raised seal).
A social security card will not suffice. If you are not a US citizen but want
to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, a passport from your country of origin
is required.
3. What
documents do I need for inter-island travel?
Only a government issue valid ID is required for travel with-in the United
States Virgin Islands. For travel to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) a passport
is required for U.S. Citizens
.4. I
will be traveling with a minor child. What documents do I need
to present for them?
An ORIGINAL copy of the child’s birth certificate with a raised seal.
See also FAMILY TRAVEL
5. I will
be traveling with my dog/cat/pet. Does the animal have to be quarantined?
What documents do I need to present?
If you can’t leave your furry friend at home- you will be happy to know
that St. Croix is very pet friendly. There are no quarantine regulations for
healthy animals. First, you need to check with your airline and make arrangements
for their travel. Some airlines will not carry pets in the cabin; some can
only transport animals in the belly of the plane at certain times of the year.
Once you receive the OK from the airlines, the animal will need a Health Certificate
for travel from your veterinarian no more than 30 days prior to your departure.
Please check out our PET
FRIENDLY page for more info.

TRAVEL INFO
1. Is there an airport on St. Croix? What is the airport
code?

shore, mid-island. The airport code to use is STX. There is also a seaplane
terminal located on the boardwalk in downtown Christiansted.
2. What
is the best way to get to St. Croix?
The EASIEST way to get to St. Croix is by plane. There are numerous daily flights

you worth it?. If you work with a travel agent you can get great deals on flights,
accommodations, and excursions. Decide which is the best place for you to stay
(see our accommodations
guide) and then do your research to see if they offer a "package deal" for
the activities you are interested in. Many of the hotels and resorts do offer
packages for divers, golf lovers, fishing enthusiasts, shoppers, history buffs...get
the idea?
4. What
is the telephone area code?
The area code for the USVI is 340.

WHAT SHOULD I PACK?
1. Should I bring a sweater
for cool Caribbean nights?
Maybe a light-weight, long sleeve cover up to keep the breeze off of you and
some restaurants are air conditioned. The lows in the evening dip into the low
to mid 70’s…BRRRRR. Bottom line: pack light. Ladies can dress in
a nice sundress for dinner; men can wear slacks and a breezy button down. Other
essentials: SUNBOCK- and lots of it, wear it every day and re-apply often. ALSO:
bathing suits, comfortable walking shoes, hat; don't forget your prescriptions
and travel documents. The Travel Security Administration (TSA) has posted the
requirements fir toiletries, etc here,
and we suggest you read this first.
2. Are
the electrical outlets like the ones in my home?
Yep. Just like the ones at home. No adapter is necessary. But, you might want
to re-think bringing all of those electrical gadgets; you are on vacation after
all. Do you need to blow-dry your hair? Its just going to get wet again!
3. What
if I need to do laundry?
Check with your hotel/resort; some offer this service in house. Otherwise,
there are PLENTY of laundry mats where you can sit and do your own or drop
off and pick up later

WHERE
SHOULD I STAY ON ST. CROIX?
1. Are there any resorts on St. Croix?
Of course! We are still a sleepy little island that offers luxury and the comforts
of home, but no hotel is larger than 200 rooms. You can find the larger style
resorts that offer a full array of amenities on all areas of the island
2. Are
there any small inns or B&Bs?
Some travelers prefer the intimacy of staying at an inn or B&B. They get
to know the inn-keeper and get the insiders scoop on activities, places to
eat, etc. St. Croix offers some beautiful inns that provide just that and more!
3. Can
I rent a home or condo? Is this a good option for me?
If you are looking for a bit more privacy, want to come and go as you please…a
home away from home- then this option is for you. Condos range from efficiency
size to 3 & 4 bedrooms, pool/restaurant on site, some right on the beach.
Homes (or rental villas) run the gamut from cozy one or two bedroom cottages
to large, elaborate 5,6,7…bedrooms, entire properties equipped with
pool; a great option for a large family or corporate vacation. Both options
are ideal for those looking to cook their own meals!
4. Do
the rates vary at different times of the year?
Yes. There are in-season and off-season rates. The actual dates that rates
are valid depend on the business, so check with them. Typically, season runs
December through May; off-season June through November. For more information
on where to stay on St .Croix, please see our accommodations
guide.
5. Are
there campgrounds on St. Croix?
Yes- island style dwellings! There are unique cabins built around majestic
mahogany trees in the rainforest that are available for your stay. There is
currently no beachfront campground established. See our eco-lodging
page for more info.

I
HAVE SPECIAL TRAVEL NEEDS
1. I am disabled and in a wheelchair. Will St. Croix
work for me?
There are many businesses, activities and accommodations that cater to guests
with special needs.

some cool articles from people who have done it and lived it! Click

2. I have trouble walking. Will St. Croix work for me?
Well, you may not want to go hike to the tidal pools, but you can take 4 wheel
jeep tour there! Both Christiansted and Frederiksted are historic towns, built
in the late 1700's. The sidewalks can be challenging with uneven stones, curbs
and bricks. Take your time and walk carefully- assistance can be arranged.
3. I don’t drive. Will St. Croix work for me?
TAXI PLEASE! Frankly, this is a great way to see our island- let someone else
do the driving while you sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Taxis are
one option to get you from place to another, and island transportation is easily
arranged by you or you host hotel, restaurant or shop. Consider an island tour
in an open air safari bus or even a 4 wheel jeep to reach out of the way locations.
Either way, there are plenty of options to get you going. Our TAXI
page has more information on fares to and from specific locations and who
you can make special arrangements with.

GETTING AROUND ST. CROIX & PUBLIC
TRANSPORTATION
1. Do you REALLY drive
on the left side of the road and why?
It's true. We are one of the few places that drive on the left and historians
are still arguing over why we do this. Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it
quickly because most of the roads are 2 lanes. Just follow what the person in
front of you is doing. For the most part, traffic travels at a slow to moderate
pace. But please remember to wear your seat belt! It's the law.
2. Is my U.S.
driver’s license valid?
As long as it has not expired in the states, your valid U.S. drivers license
will be valid in the USVI, too. If you plan to stay longer than 60 days, the
law says to obtain a valid Virgin Islands drivers license.
3. Will I need to rent a vehicle?
Evaluate your style of vacation. If you mostly want to stay in town and stick
to the beaten path (which is terrific), then there are plenty of taxis to
get you where you want to go. If you get the itch to explore, there are great
open air taxis that will take you on a tour
of the island and give you all the interesting facts and historical background.
If you want to explore even more and get out on your own, then go ahead,
be a rebel- rent that car! Outside of the towns, not many people walk around,
so take into consideration where you are staying. We recommend that you rent
a car for at least a day to explore the rainforest, north shore, east
and west ends.
4. How old do you have to be to rent a
car?
For insurance purposes, you must be at least 25 years old to rent a vehicle.
5. Do I have to wear my seatbelt?
YES, YES, YES! It is the law and we want to keep you safe!
6. Do I have to secure my infant/toddler
in their own seat? Can I rent one?
Yes! Most car rental companies have car seats available. To ensure you have
this covered, ask your rental agent at time of car booking. Infants are not
required to be restrained in their on seat in a taxi van, though it is recommended
that toddlers be secured with a seatbelt.
7. Is there any
public transportation I can use, like buses?
There is public transportation but you may want to leave plenty of time (and
then some) to get to your destination. You will notice bus stops around the
island and sometimes you’ll catch a horse, chickens or goats just hanging
out in the shade. The buses are nice and air-conditioned.
8. Are taxis accessible?
What do they cost?
Taxis are readily available at the airport, hotels, and resorts. You can also
call ahead to arrange a pick up/drop off. There are also Taxi Vans that locals
use, sort of like a bus system, but you can flag them down anywhere. Taxi Vans
are clearly marked with a taxi light on the roof of the vehicle. The distance
traveled determines the cost. For a complete list of taxi fares, you
can look here
9. Can I get a
driving map of St. Croix?
Driving on the left in unfamiliar territory can be a little intimidating, so
a helpful, navigable map of St. Croix would be helpful, right? We produce the
St. Croix Pocket Map- a handy little map with all of the major and minor roads
clearly indicated, major intersections noted, estate names marked, points of
interest, beaches, …the list goes on and on. We can send it to you along
with our favorite island magazine and any other info you are interested in
about St. Croix. Click here
to create your personalized packet and request a map of St. Croix.

FUN
TIMES: ACTIVITIES
1. What kinds of island tours are there?
Self guided, open air van, 4-wheel jeeps, kayaks, sailing, power boats …..check
them all out here.
2. Are
there any parks?
For a small island, we have a large number of parks. St. Croix has dedicated
National Park Land in Christiansted, Frederiksted, Salt River, Sandy Point,
and Buck Island Underwater National Monument. Click
here for more info on our National Parks. There are also a few dedicated
smaller park areas perfect for picnics and play time, such as Cramers Park,
Canegata Ball Park and the Frederiksted Pool.
3. I'd
like to go out on a boat. What are my options?
Let me count the ways…a kayak
tour or kayak rental on your own, private
day sails, snorkeling trips, sunset sails, group
excursions on a catamaran to Buck Island, group excursions on a glass bottom
power boat, full and half day sport
fishing trips…
4. I'd
like to rent a boat. Is that possible?
At this time, there are no powerboat rentals on St. Croix. But, you can rent kayaks
or jet-skis or contact one of the fishing
boats and chances are you can "rent" one by the hour with the
captain.
5. I heard there is a casino on St. Croix. Is that true?
You Bet! (get it?) There is one casino on the south shore of the east end of
St. Croix with live music and gaming nightly. You must be at least 21 years
old to enter the casino and provide proper I.D. Want more St. Croix nightlife? Click
here.
6. I’d
like to play golf. How much? Do I need a tee-time?
St. Croix is home to three golf courses. Carambola Golf is a championship course
designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. The Buccaneer Resort's course is popular
and offers lessons. The Reef Golf Course is a nine- hole course on the east
end. There is even miniature golf! The green fees will vary from course to
course and how many rounds you would like to play. A tee-time is always recommended,
so please call in advance. MORE
INFO ABOUT GOLF
7. Are

FUN
TIMES: TIPS
1. What if I get bored on such a small island?
Are you kidding? There are active people who have been here for years and are
still finding fun and exciting things to do all the time. Once you have enough
of the sun and sand, check out the rain forest via horseback or
an open air Jeep. You can learn
to sail, scuba dive, kite
surf, deep sea fish,
take a sunset sail, go on a nature hike in the rain forest to exquisite tide
pools, tour the world's #1 rum
factory (and get free samples!), discover historic sugar plantation ruins.
You get the idea. Take a look at your interests back home. History- Contact
the Landmarks
Society, Environmental Type- Check out our environmental
association. Shop-aholic- fill
your bag to your heart's content by shopping our tropical, fun stores.
Are you getting the picture that you should never be bored? Relaxed, yes. Bored,
no.
2. Should I make reservations in advance for activities I want
to do?
It is always a good idea to call ahead of time. If you know there's an activity
you don't want to miss, plan this in advance or upon arrival to ensure your
preferred date is available. Some places might tell you a reservation is not
needed, like at a restaurant, but others, like fishing, kayaking, or horseback
riding definitely need to know in advance so that they can prepare for you.
Be prepared to hear that a trip or day has been combined with another reservation
(some trips require a minimum number of people)
3. Where can I find the best souvenirs?
There are several souvenir shops in both Christiansted and Frederiksted. Please
remember not to take anything from our beaches.
4. What
is the sales tax?
Zero, zip, nada, nothing. There is no sales tax on goods purchased in St. Croix.
The price you see is the price you pay, no tax.
5. How
much duty free allowance is each person allowed?
Any U.S. resident, including children, can return, or send, to the mainland
$1,600 worth of duty-free imports every thirty days. If you go over your
$1,600 allowance, V. I. Purchases are dutiable at a flat rate of 6 percent
on the next $1,000. U.S. residents over the age of 21 can return with
five bottles of liquor duty-free or six, if one of the bottles is locally produced,
such as good ol' Cruzan Rum. You can find out more about other U.S. Customs
Regulations here.

FAMILY
TRAVEL
1. We are planning a family vacation with children of all ages. HELP!!
St. Croix is a great place for children. Lots of activities are family oriented
and can be enjoyed by "kids" of all ages. Most resorts have a Kids
Counselor or “camp” where you can leave the kids for a couple of
hours with childcare professionals. Be sure to ask about discounted rates if
you are traveling with a large group. Kids will enjoy exploring the old forts,
hunting for treasures on the beach, horseback riding, learning to snorkel,
kayaking….for more
ideas for family travel click here.
2. I will be traveling with a minor child. What documents do I need to present
for them?
An original birth certificate with a raised seal is needed.
3. Can
I rent a crib? Where can I buy baby supplies?
Check with your hotelier or villa manager to see if they have a portable crib
for use, most do. Baby supplies such as diapers and formula (or if you need
to replace Jr’s sippy cup) can be purchased at any grocery store or one
of the two Kmarts on island.
4. What
if there is an emergency?
If you or your child requires medical assistance while on St. Croix- you can
be taken to the emergency room at the Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital, or if it
is minor, your concierge can arrange for a doctor’s visit. If your child
has a known medical condition, it would be a good idea to bring necessary paperwork
and extra medication with you when traveling.

SAND-N-SURF
1. Are the beaches crowded?
No. The beaches on St. Croix are not typically crowded. In season, there might
be more people at resort beaches, or at the more popular beaches that have
great snorkeling.
2. Are
there admission fees to the beaches?
No. All beaches are public, so you have free access. If visiting a beach within
a resort's property, there may be an entry fee to use their facilities.
3. What
if I find a pretty shell? Can I take it as a souvenir?
It is not against the law, but we would prefer for you NOT to take the shell.
You should not remove anything, dead or alive from the beaches. Why? Click
here to find out.
4. Can I snorkel at the beach?
The reef that surrounds most of St. Croix is home to beautiful colorful fish,
turtles, coral, sea fans and other interesting sea critters. Many beaches are
a short swim to the reef or an area designated for snorkeling, so ENJOY! Please
remember to LOOK but don't TOUCH the fragile coral. They can be easily harmed,
and can sometimes irritate the skin.
5. Are
there any Sharks?
Well, yes there are sharks. Sharks live in the ocean and our island is surrounded
by ocean. BUT, the likely- hood of you coming face to face with one while snorkeling
is pretty slim, next to nil. There are a MILLION beautiful fish, coral reefs,
turtles, octopus...so much to see in our waters.
6. Is there gear to rent such as chairs, umbrellas
and snorkeling gear?
Most resorts and hotels have gear available for their guests; non-guests might
pay a small fee. If you are staying in a private villa, condo, small inn or
otherwise, ask ahead of time if these items are available for use; most keep
extra gear around for their guests.
7. Are
there any nude beaches on St. Croix?
Nope. Nudity is against the law on any Virgin Island Beach. It was tough, but
we researched all the beaches on St. Croix and compiled a comprehensive guide
for you HERE. Find the beach
that suits you best.

MOVING TO ST. CROIX
1. Are homes expensive?
The price of a home or condo is going to depend on the location, the size,
the view and the amenities included. Some condos are very reasonable and there
are also multi-million dollar homes. Lots are available to build your own home,
but all materials for construction are shipped here first, making this a pricey
option. We recommend you contact
a real estate agent to help you find the home that is right for you.
2. How do I find out about renting a place to live?
Check with one of our real estate agencies; most of the have a rental specialist
on staff to help with long-term rentals. You can also check the classified
section of the local newspaper, The St. Croix Avis and word of mouth usually
works pretty well. You can rent condos, stand alone home, guests houses on
a larger property, apartments attached to homes (usually downstairs) and even
rooms with-in private homes.
3. Where
is the best place to live?
On St. Croix. Seriously, it just depends on your preference. Want a view? Then
find a place in one of the MANY hills (but not if you are scared of heights!)
Living by the water certainly has its advantages…but keep in mind the
harsh elements on your belongings. You’ll have to upgrade to appliances
that can with-stand the salt air better! East…West…North Shore,
South Shore they are all beautiful!
4. Do
I need to buy a car? Where?
Evaluate your lifestyle, where you are going to live? How far is that from
will you will work or play? You will most likely want a car, but don;t buy
a car that will break the bank. We have car dealerships here that sell new
or used vehicles in all price ranges. Check local the local newspapers for
used cars, too. You can ship the car you already have from the east coast,
but will need to change insurance and work out the specifics with your financier.
There is public transportation with VITRAN Buses and shared taxi vans that
pick people up who are waiting at the bus stops. After living on the island
for a while, you may find that if you start walking, someone you know is sure
to drive by soon and will stop and give you a ride! Hitch-hiking is not recommended.
5. Where
can I find out about employment opportunities?
There is one employment agency on island, but we suggest you contact the types
of businesses you are interested in directly to see if you can send them your
resume. Don’t ask, “Are you hiring?” because chances are,
you’ll get shut down. If you ask to send your resume and they like what
they see, chances are they will find a place for you. Besides, it’s just
more professional. Patience is an important lesson when seeking employment.
It may take awhile to find the right fit and earn the money you need. Stay
open minded.
6. Where
can I find out more about schools for my children? What’s
the school system like?
There are public and several private schools to choose from for all grades.
You can choose a school based on your religion (Catholic, Baptist, Seventh
Day, etc) or teaching philosophy of learning, such as Montessori. We have complied
a list of both public and private schools with their contact info here.
7. How
can I get a telephone, cable, and internet connections?
You only have one option for you home telephone service, but more for cable
(or satellite) and internet (wireless, dsl and good old-fashion dial up). Click
here for a list of providers. Check out our moving
here page for a list of people who can help you move, provide you medical,
life car and renters insurance, help with phone and cable, find a place to
live, help with your pets and a lot more!
8. Is
there a hospital on island? How are the doctors? What if there’s
an emergency?
There is a very good hospital on St. Croix with top-notch service and medical
care. The Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital is located mid-island near the Sunny
Isle Shopping center. The doctors are top in their field and professional.
If you require emergency attention, there is an emergency room at the hospital.
If your medical needs cannot be addressed on St. Croix, your professional physician
will make a recommendation for you to go to Puerto Rico or to the nearest U.S.
location for treatment. Click
here for complete info about our hospital and medical providers

THE
LAW
1. I've heard St. Croix has a crime problem. Is
that true?
Have you looked in your local paper lately? Crime in St. Croix is no worse
than it is in small town America. When you are on vacation, sometimes your
head is in the clouds and unfortunately people will take advantage of that.
Just follow the same rules you would follow at home: don't carry tons of money
with you, lock your doors, don't leave valuables in your vehicle, don't walk
into dark alleys alone and for heaven's sake, don't flaunt your jewelry. Just
relax and enjoy yourself!
2. What is the legal drinking age?
The rumor that if you are tall enough to reach the bar, then you’re old
enough to drink is not true. BUT, the legal drinking age is lower than most
of the United States. You must be at least 18 to order an alcoholic beverage
on St. Croix. Please note, you must be at least 21 to enter the casino. Be
prepared to present proper I.D. for entry or to be served alcoholic beverages.
3. Why do I have to wear my seatbelt?
BECAUSE IT’S THE LAW!! We want everyone on St. Croix to be safe. Why
ruin a perfectly good vacation by not wearing your seatbelt? A policeman will
pull you over and write you a ticket if you are not wearing your seatbelt.

1. Will my cell phone work in the islands?
Yes and no. First, be sure your plan includes St. Croix in the coverage so
you will not be charged outrageous roaming fees. Second, service will depend

a pre-paid phone at Radio Shack with a set amount of minutes. (Wait, you’re
on vacation – leave that cell phone at home!)

stamp or post-card stamp is in the states, it is the same here. Bring your
own or stop in one of our post offices to purchase stamps for letters and postcards.
