The Tan Tan jeeps pick you up at the end of Queen Cross Street in Christiansted, where the tour begins.
After loading up our drinks and ice in the coolers we headed east out of Christiansted and started to climb Goat Hill.
The view atop Goat Hill looking down on to Jacks Bay.
Next, we headed to Scenic Drive located in Salt River. We then drove up Blue Mountain where our tour guide pointed out different areas of St. Croix.
The views just went on forever!
Driving along the fun, but bumpy Scenic Drive, we came upon an historic sugar mill that our guide proceeded to drive us right through!
By now we had worked up an appetite. We stopped to enjoy our sandwiches at a secluded shady spot in the rain forest. Lunch is included in the full day tour and is called in to a local deli in advance by your guide.
While eating lunch Max our tour guide, pointed out local flora and fauna like this gigantic Saman Tree.
Time to hit the road and get moving! The excitement grew as the jeeps raced down the dirt road.
On our way down Blue Mountain to North Shore.
Our next stop is one of St. Croix's hidden hideaways: The Tide Pools. Driving on this road is truly "off road driving".
Yea! We made it to the bottom in one piece! The ride can be a bit bumpy, but that is part of the experience. Don't worry- the drivers are VERY experienced.
The jeeps are left on the black rock beach while we hiked through the water around a rock jetty. Remember to wear shoes that you don't mind getting wet, or bring an extra pair of water shoes.
We were rewarded with a tranquil view of the Tide Pools.
Time to jump in and cool off! The ocean waves break just on the other side creating calm pools of crystal clear water. Sometimes, you can catch the waves breaking on the rocks.
Time to make the four-wheel ride back up the hill to Scenic Drive.
The Mt. Pellier Club, or Domino Club as the locals call it, was our next stop off of Mahogany Road. Here we sampled home made liquors and enjoyed a little bit of shade in the rainforest.
This is where the infamous Beer Drinking Pigs live. Don't worry- the beer is non-alcoholic. Be careful or you might get sprayed!
As you can see from our smiling faces- we had a blast on this unique island tour. Not only did we get to see some interesting, out of the way places that St. Croix has to offer, but we also learned about its history, culture and native trees and plants.
The end of our full day tour brings us back into Christiansted. Please be sure to drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen and enjoy the beauty of St. Croix that can only be seen from an open air jeep tour.
