Visitors to St. Croix often want to know what are considered the “must-dos” of experiencing our beautiful island. While everyone who lives here has their own list of what visitors should do, in almost every case it will include going to Caribbean night at one of the local resorts. Caribbean nights offer a taste of Crucian culture, both literally and figuratively! These family-friendly, weekly events provide delicious Crucian and Caribbean cuisine, fun local and cultural entertainment, and the iconic moko jumbies.

What are moko jumbies? Celebrated as a part of the cultural heritage of the Caribbean, these stilt dancers take pride of place here on St. Croix and throughout the Virgin Islands as the guardians that ward away evil spirits. The important thing to know is that they enthrall both children and adults alike, and you don’t want to miss a chance to see them. The good news is that there are three resorts on different parts of St. Croix that offer Caribbean night on different weekdays, so you can choose the one that works best for you and your family.

Each Thursday night, Divi Carina Bay All-Inclusive Resort & Casino hosts their Caribbean Beach BBQ starting at 6pm. Located on the East End of the island, Divi’s Caribbean Beach BBQ is held at The Dockside Restaurant overlooking the South Shore of St. Croix. Enjoy a delicious beach BBQ buffet featuring Caribbean favorites, and listen to the sounds of Caribbean steel pan music. Then, learn how to dance quadrille, the official dance of the U.S. Virgin Islands, with the delightful “We Deh Yah” Cultural Dancers. Finally, the moko jumbies will dance their way onto the floor and wow the crowds with their skills. Make sure to get your picture with the moko jumbies in their colorful costumes, and take a spin around the floor with them (if you are brave enough)!

On Fridays, head to the Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort & Spa for their Pirate Buffet & Moko Jumbie Show starting at 6:30pm. Located on the West End of the island, the Pirate Buffet is held at their signature restaurant, Saman, which features ocean-view terrace dining, as well as an inviting indoor area. The bountiful Pirate Buffet includes a carving station, succulent crab, peel-and-eat shrimp, and a myriad of Crucian entrees, salads, appetizers, and desserts. Music sets the mood during dinner, often performed live by local musicians, but the highlight of the evening is the moko jumbies, of course! After the show, stay and dance awhile under the starry Caribbean sky to popular music.

Whichever venue you choose, please make your reservations in advance. You can click on the links included in the “Do More” section below to get the phone number and contact information for all three resorts. Also, if you enjoy the show (which you undoubtedly will) please make sure to tip the moko jumbies and other performers to show your appreciation. While they make it look easy, they work hard to put on a great show each and every night. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy your taste of Crucian culture!
