Rainy Day Activities on St. Croix

Many islands in the Caribbean, St. Croix included, are known for their lush, tropical landscape as much as their beautiful beaches. The reason for this gorgeous greenery is the frequently passing rain showers. Generally speaking, the rain showers come and go quickly, so you just have to find cover for a few minutes and wait them out. During the rainy months however, you are more likely to encounter rainy days and not just passing showers. For those visiting the island, rainy days can dampen your vacation plans; but, if you’re flexible, there is still plenty of fun to be had on St. Croix even when it’s raining.

Here at GoToStCroix.com we are often asked by visitors: “Is there something I can do or see on St. Croix when it’s raining?” The answer is YES! Whether you are travelling alone, enjoying a romantic interlude, or taking the kids on vacation, St. Croix offers something for everyone to do when the rain starts. Here are our picks for the Top 10 Rainy Day Activities:

1.  Tour a distillery or brewery

Touring the rum distilleries of St. Croix is near the top of all the ‘must-do’ list of attractions while visiting the island. For a nominal fee you can take a guided tour of the Cruzan Rum or Captain Morgan distilleries and learn the history of rum, as well as how it is produced. Best of all, you get to enjoy samples of this tropical libation at the end of your tour! St. Croix is also home to the first and only breadfruit vodka distillery for Mutiny Island Vodka. You can also visit our craft brewery, Leatherback Brewing Company, to see the brewing process and sample some of our local craft beers.

2.  Get a massage or spa treatment

Relax and enjoy the sound of the rain from inside the comfort of one of St. Croix’s lovely spas or salons as you indulge in a massage, manicure, pedicure, facial, lash extensions, hair cut or color, or the works. Choose from resort spas, day spas, salons, or even have a massage therapist come to you at your hotel, villa or home!

3.  Hit the casino

Enjoy the air conditioned comfort of the Divi Carina Bay Casino or Caravelle Hotel & Casino as you sip a cocktail and try your luck at the slots or one table games.

4.  Go shopping in downtown Christiansted or Frederiksted

With lots of locally owned shops, galleries, jewelry stores and specialty boutiques located close together along the historic streets you can easily walk between shops, often under awnings or arcades, and do some shopping (or buying!) without getting wet.

5.  Eat, drink and be merry

One of my personal favorite ways to enjoy the rain (without being out in it) is to grab a table or bar stool at one of the waterfront restaurants. There you can enjoy a meal, a snack, or even just a cup of coffee or a cocktail as you watch the rain fall on the Caribbean Sea. If you’re not close to the waterfront, you can still enjoy many of the island’s restaurants while you stay dry and enjoy a delicious meal.

6.  Play golf on the indoor simulator

Don’t let the rain keep you from playing your 18 holes. The Buccaneer’s Pro Shop now offers an indoor golf simulator where you can play on your choice of 93 of the world’s best golf courses including Pebble Beach, Torrey Pines, and PGA National. Just call for an appointment!

7.  Read a book

It sounds simple, but there is nothing like delving into a good book with the sound of the rain in the background. Even better, head over to Undercover Books & Gifts and peruse their great selection of books and pick out something new. You can even sit outside under the cover of the awning with a coffee and pastry to make your reading even more enjoyable. If you are lucky enough to be there on the right day, they also offer a story hour for kids, readings and book signings.

8.  Take an art, fitness or wellness class

The variety and availability of classes is ever expanding on St. Croix, so why not try one out if you need to stay dry? The island offers yoga and fitness classes in several studios and gyms, or get creative at an art class or workshop, you can even find dance lessons occasionally. Your best bet for a variety of classes and workshops is to check out our Calendar of Events.

9.  Enjoy some live music or entertainment

Just because it’s raining outside doesn’t mean the entertainment stops. You can still catch crab races, live music, and even the CoralFire Entertainment dancers performing at some of the island’s popular restaurants, resorts, and even the casino. Check our Calendar of Events for local listings.

10. Visit the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts

Head to Frederiksted and stroll through the CMCArts galleries, offering of rotating cultural exhibitions featuring local artists and art from around the Caribbean. Visit the Museum Shop and shop for art, books and unique items created by local artists. Cultural and historical exhibits are presented throughout the year, plus CMCArts offers a wide variety of classes, workshops, forums, and other educational programming during the year for all ages. CMCArts is open Tuesday-Saturday, and on Cruise Ship days, from 9am to 4pm.

Whether rain or shine, St. Croix offers a variety of fun activities for all. If some of your planned vacation activities get rained out, consider replacing them with an item or two off our Top 10 Rainy Day Activities list. Most important of all, keep in mind that the sun will (probably) come out tomorrow, and maybe this rain shower will bring a rainbow!
