Primitive Spearfishing Intensive
In this class, you will learn several different types of primitive fish spears and where, when, and how to use them. Using wood, bone, stone, and natural plant fibers, we will be making leichster spears, single-point spears, and spear guns. You will learn how to use them from land and in the water, and how to modify them accordingly. We will go to a different place each day to spearfish, so you will get to see some beautiful places on the island.
Basic free-diving techniques will also be covered, so your skills in the water will be enhanced. Underwater, there is a whole ecosystem to explore, and we can’t help but include that as part of the class as well. We believe in conservation, so therefore it is vitally important to learn the ecosystem’s species and their current population health. We will be going after mostly lionfish, since they are an invasive species here in the Virgin Islands.
Primitive hooks and line as well as lobster nooses are also some skills we can get into with time permitting.
