History
The Estate Morningstar water mill a historic site on the North Shore of St. Croix dating back to at least the mid-1750s. The well tower was constructed of stone masonry and coral block by enslaved Africans, as is about 16 feet in diameter and over 40 feet high. While most of St. Croix’s 18th-century sugar plantations relied on wind or animal power to operate their mills, this site utilized the flowing water of the Salt River to grind sugarcane. While a traditional windmill was also built on the estate during that period, the water mill remains a distinct historical feature.
In 2019, the water mill was recovered from the bush within the Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve. The site is now managed for visitors and includes a short, easy trail for exploring the ruins. A small parking area is located near the junction of North Shore road and Scenic Road.
