The Windsor Farm Trails is a scenic inland hike, winding through the lush rainforest of the island’s northwestern hills. This peaceful loop trail follows historic estate roads and forest paths beneath a canopy of trees, making it a favorite for hikers (and cyclists) looking to escape the heat. Along the way, you’ll cross small guts, pass native vegetation, and enjoy occasional glimpses of the surrounding hills and coastline. The trail offers a great opportunity to experience the island’s natural beauty, with excellent birdwatching and the chance to spot wildlife including lizards, hermit crabs, butterflies (at certain times of the year, white butterflies are so prolific, they are referred to as “Crucian Snow”), and the occasional mongoose and wild deer.

TRAILHEAD
The Windsor Farm Trail begins near the historic Windsor Farm area on St. Croix’s northwest side. Parking is available near the trail entrance, although spaces are limited. Look for the marked trailhead, which leads directly into the forest. Cell service can be limited in this area, so it’s a good idea to download directions before arriving.
HIKE INFORMATION
The Windsor Farm Trail is generally well-defined and follows a combination of old plantation roads and natural forest paths. The terrain consists of dirt, rocks, exposed roots, and a few short but steady climbs. While there are no extremely steep sections, hikers should expect uneven footing throughout much of the route. There are directional and informational signage.
One of the trail’s greatest features is its dense tree canopy, which provides welcome shade for most of the hike. This makes Windsor Farm one of the more comfortable trails to explore, even during the warmer months. After periods of heavy rain, sections of the trail can become muddy, so proper footwear is recommended.
This trail sees fewer visitors than some of St. Croix’s coastal hikes, it’s common to enjoy long stretches of peaceful solitude.
The loop is suitable for hikers with a moderate fitness level and is popular with both hikers and mountain bikers. Dogs are welcome but should remain under control, particularly where the trail narrows.
HISTORY OF WINDSOR FARM
Windsor Farm was once part of St. Croix’s extensive plantation era, when sugar production dominated the island’s economy. Although nature has reclaimed much of the landscape, traces of the island’s agricultural history remain throughout the surrounding area. Today, the former estate lands have become an important natural habitat, preserving one of St. Croix’s most beautiful forest environments while offering visitors the opportunity to experience the island’s rich ecological diversity.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good traction, as the trail can be rocky, rooted, and muddy after rainfall.
Bring plenty of water, especially during warmer weather.
Insect repellent is recommended, particularly after rain.
While much of the trail is shaded, sunscreen and a hat are still advised for exposed sections.
Dogs are permitted but should remain under control and owners should clean up after them.
There are no restroom facilities, drinking water, or other amenities at the trailhead.
As with any hike on St. Croix, avoid leaving valuables visible inside your vehicle.
