Have you heard about the Shell Shack, but it’s exact location is a mystery to you? You’re not alone. Where is it? Is it hard to get to? What’s the story? It is a hidden gem rather than a formal attraction. Two local men, born and raised on St. Croix, and with a lot of help from friends along the way, through years of beach combing and foraging, have constructed the Shell Shack, a handmade tiki hut structure built from conch shells, drift wood, bamboo, and other natural materials. It’s fun to ‘discover’ it when you know where to go.
Believe it or not, there is more than one shell shack – this post and map location are for the east end shell shack. The shell shack is a short walk down a beach not usually traversed, which makes it a surprise delight when you stumble upon it. If you’re already on the east end, and are headed to Point Udall, Divi, or Grapetree Bay, along South Shore Road, the shell shack makes a fun 30 minute stop and pairs nicely with a visit to other east end attractions.
How to get there
Drive east from Christiansted on South Shore Road (Rte 60)
As you head east, you will approach a series of unmarked turn-offs on the right (coastal) side of the road, each leads to a beach. Only one of them is the correct turn off.
Before you reach “Elizabeth Point” (us long-timers and maps may still refer to it as Grassy Point), turn off South Shore Rd at the last turnoff before Elizabeth Point.
Park off-road in the dart area – do not take any risks and attempt to drive onto the beach, it is forbidden. Walk down to the beach and turn LEFT (east).
The shack is approx 100 yards down the beach in front of some giant rocks on the shoreline.
What to expect
There is no admission fee.
Parking is generally available in pull-offs along the road, but be careful not to block traffic.
The structures can change over time due to weather, hurricanes, or being rebuilt by visitors, so they may not always look exactly as they do in photos.
Sunrise is especially beautiful in this area, and the drive itself offers sweeping ocean views.
PLEASE LEAVE PARADISE IN IT’S PLACE.
Take nothing from the shell shack. Leave only natural objects (shells, beach glass). Do us all a favor and collect any trash you may see along the trek and take it with you when you leave.
