Historic Charm, Modern Luxury at The Buccaneer

We’re checking in at the first hotel in St. Croix to be built and operated by an island family, The Buccaneer Beach & Golf Resort. One of the most iconic hotels in all of the US Virgin Islands, this oceanfront beauty is located on the East End of St. Croix on Beauregard Bay. This is a beautiful place, with lush property, lots of amenities, and three beaches, so we’ve included lots of photos to entice you.

The history of The Buccaneer is long and fascinating. In 1653, Charles Martel (a Knight of Malta) constructed a French Greathouse, the first building on Estate Shoys where The Buccaneer now stands. In 1733, when the Danes bought the island, Governor von Prock built his home on the estate, turning the French Greathouse into a sugar factory and erecting the sugar mill which still exists on the property today. Michael Shoy, from whom the area known as Estate Shoys received its name, bought the estate from von Prock and began growing cotton. Later, the Heyliger Company raised cattle here. Finally, in 1947, the Armstrong family, who had owned and operated the cattle estate since 1922, opened The Buccaneer for business with just eleven guest rooms.

This is what The Buccaneer Beach & Golf Resort looks like now.  Perched atop a hill with sweeping views of Beauregard Bay, a lush golf course and manicured tropical grounds, the resort is home to three postcard-perfect beaches. Here you can enjoy the endless views of the Caribbean Sea and see the neighboring islands off in the distance, as well as stunning sunrises and sunsets.  

The Buccaneer offers a luxury resort experience with modern amenities while still embracing it’s old-world charm. Did we mention the amenities? We’ll get to all those in a moment.  First, let’s see the rooms! 

Luxury Guest Rooms and Suites

The spacious Oceanfront Rooms are the most popular and are perched above the shore between Grotto and Mermaid Beach. They sport 16-foot high wood ceilings and picture windows that frame magnificent sea views. Plus, each room has a sitting area and a stone patio that fronts the sea below.

For families or groups, The Buccaneer has Family Cottage Suites available for families with children 14 and under only. Or, choose the Ficus Suite which offers two master bedrooms, each with full baths, and a separate sitting area with a pull-out couch. This suite also has a kitchenette, dining area and another sitting area with a pull-out couch and a third full bath. Plus, the Ficus Suite has the option to connect to the Frigate Suite for an additional master room with a full bath, and sitting room has two day beds and an additional full bath. Both suites also include an expansive patio/balcony overlooking the pool and the sea.

Luxurious villa-style accommodations can be found in the Luxury Beachside Doubloons. Located on the east side of Mermaid Beach, these accommodations have sitting areas with picture windows and marbled floors, patios and balconies with dramatic views of the sea and Christiansted Harbor. Fine furnishings, walk-in closets, spectacular baths with whirlpool tubs and separate showers make these rooms a favorite for honeymoon guests.

The Buccaneer Beach House at Whistle Point is perfect private villa for larger groups, like family reunions or special events. This six-bedroom enclave is surrounded by the sea and gardens, and includes a main house, two cottages and a villa-style master suite, and a private pool.

Postcard Perfect Beaches

The palm tree-lined, sandy beaches and gorgeous ocean views are two of the things that keep visitors and locals coming back to The Buccaneer. The Beach Shack at Mermaid Beach has water sports gear available for guests, and from Mermaid Beach you’ll find great snorkeling, and the calm waters are perfect for paddleboarding, kayaking, swimming or just floating. The Grotto beach is perfect for those who want to relax or read a book while listening to the gentle sounds of the waves. The Buccaneer’s third beach, Whistle Beach, is an over-the-hill beach favored for its seclusion. The natural beach does not feature any structures and is often used for elope weddings.

Next to the Grotto Beach you’ll also find an inviting pool overlooking the Caribbean, with shaded lounge chairs inviting sun drenched chaises.

18-Hole Golf Course and Tennis Courts

The Buccaneer Beach & Golf Resort features an 18-hole golf course with stunning views of the Caribbean and St. Croix coast. This par 70 course was designed by Bob Joyce in 1973, and offers ocean views from 13 holes. Challenging, yet very playable, The Buccaneer is an ideal resort course just minutes from your guest room door with rounds of less than four hours and fun for golfers of all skill levels. Tee times are required and can be made by calling the fully-stocked Pro Shop at (340) 712-2144. Two-person carts are available and walking the course is permitted. Golf Pro Kenny Peets is also available for private lessons.

The Buccaneer is also home to six Plexipave tennis courts and two Tedelgrass courts. The Buccaneer specializes in pairing up players for enjoyable matches year-round, and weekly round robins and doubles drills for ladies, fitness clinics and other seasonal clinics are scheduled for guests. The tennis courts are open Monday through Friday from 8am-11am and 3pm-6pm, and Saturday from 8am – 11am. Reservations can be made by calling (340) 712-2143 or emailing tennisshopstx@gmail.com.

Three On-Site Restaurants

The Terrace is The Buccaneer’s most iconic restaurant, high up on a hill overlooking the sea the open-air dining is cooled by the Caribbean trade winds. Currently, The Terrace Restaurant is open for breakfast daily from 7am-10am. Guests can choose from a bountiful buffet, which includes eggs, breakfast meats, pancakes, French toast, fresh baked muffins, omelets and daily specials. Reservations are required for non-hotel guests.

The beachfront Mermaid Restaurant is open daily for lunch (11:30am-3:30pm), beach service (11:30am-5pm) and dinner (6pm-9pm) as well as brunch on Sunday (11am-3pm). Themed dinners are offers on Mondays with our Grill Night, featuring fire dancers, and Tuesdays, featuring a local marketplace and Moko Jumbies. Reservations are required.

Beauregard’s on the Beach at The Buccaneer is a beautifully chic beachfront restaurant serving fresh daily sushi specials and light bites from the grill. The thatched roof and mahogany tables on the Grotto Beach provide a relaxed and intimate atmosphere to unwind with a refreshing cocktail or meal. Beauregard’s is open Wednesday through Sunday 12pm-6pm (with a full bar open from 1am-6pm). Reservations are recommended.
