Altona Lagoon is a scenic public park and coastal bay area that is a favorite local spot for recreation and fitness. Located just east of downtown Christiansted, its calm waters make the lagoon an ideal spot for outdoor activities like snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and birdwatching. The area between the lagoon and the bay offers a quieter experience than the more crowded beaches, and features picnic tables in the shade for gatherings, and a boat ramp for launching boats and small watercraft.
If you’re looking for free fitness and fun, Altona Lagoon features a playground, an AARP/FitLot outdoor fitness park, and scenic walking paths and trails. If you want to use the fitness park, FitLot provides an intro class, a one-hour circuit training workout, or an 8-week series to get into a regular active routine. All FitLot classes are 100% free to attend and led by certified fitness professionals.
The lagoon area is ecologically rich, featuring mangroves, fish nurseries, and bird habitats. Visitors can enjoy the local flora and fauna, or watch for sea turtles and dolphins from the shore. Altona Lagoon is also one of two bioluminescent bays on St. Croix, which you can see for yourself on a guided kayak tour with a local tour operator.
