Hotel Spotlight: Victoria House

Join us for a picture book style look at the newly-renovated Victoria House on the Frederiksted waterfront steps from the Frederiksted Pier. Built in the late 18th century, Victoria House has been renovated into a small boutique hotel with studio, one and two bedroom suites fully equipped to anticipate your every need. Uniquely situated on the waterfront in downtown Frederiksted, you will be delighted by the sweeping Caribbean Sea views and spectacular sunsets.

History of Victoria House

Victoria House was built in the late 1700’s, and has housed many prominent Frederiksted merchants and citizens. After the house was partially burnt in the “Fireburn” labor insurrection of 1878,  it was repaired and rebuilt (as many other Frederiksted buildings were) in the Victorian architectural style of the times, which explains why Victoria House and downtown Frederiksted are a distinct combination of 18th and 19th century architectural styles.  The iconic gingerbread trim was added at this time.

This is what the Victoria House looked like in the 1960’s.  The Gardine Family has owned it since 1946 and except for the street level, the house has been a private residence.

Victoria House’s ground floor was home to the popular Blue Moon Restaurant and jazz club for many years.  It was a place for live jazz music from local and visiting musicians, delicious fine dining, and unforgettable times with friends.  The Blue Moon has been closed for many years, but wait until you see what the space looks like now!

Victoria House is Open!

This is what the Victoria House looks like now.  Still privately owned and under totally new management,  the team spent most of the pandemic working behind the scenes so that when travelers returned, the Victoria House would be ready with modern amenities today’s travelers will love.  Without a grand opening, or any fanfare at all, this fully re-imagined property is ready for its close up as a beautiful place to stay, play, eat, and experience the treasures of St. Croix.

When you’re at the Victoria House, you’ll be on the historic downtown Frederiksted waterfront.  Your views are of Strand Street and the Caribbean Sea, and the famous Frederiksted Pier.

The hotel faces west, with 180 degree panoramic sea views.  Along Strand Street you’ll be able to walk to the Frederiksted Pier for snorkeling, scuba, day sails, and sunset sails.  Watch the boats come and go.  The Frederiksted pier is also a top dive site in the Caribbean, and the easy access and clear water makes for the perfect place to learn to dive.

Victoria House is walking distance to several restaurants, and has a restaurant in the building, too, many serving fresh caught local seafood and produce grown within a mile or two. Multiple dive shops, boutiques as well as historic walking tours, cultural attractions, and a beautifully landscaped park directly across the street. This is your neighborhood.

As the sun sets in the late afternoon sky, be sure to watch for the green flash (it’s not a myth)!
