What is ‘wellness’? It is the active process of making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. More than just being free from illness, wellness is a dynamic process of growth and change – and here on St. Croix there are many activities, services and caregivers to help you on your personal wellness journey.
Wellness is the interconnectedness of the many aspects of life which, when in balance, create an overall healthy lifestyle. A few important components that contribute to wellness include regular physical activity, healthy eating habits, sleeping well, good self-care, stress reduction, having fun, being mindful, and even knowing when to seek medical attention. Here are a few ways you can focus on your personal wellness:
Get Regular Physical Activity
It may sound cliche, but yoga is in fact a great way to work on several wellness aspects at once. Yoga allows practitioners to get in physical activity while also focusing on mindfulness and breathing. Meditation is a great tool for reducing stress. I personally like to do my meditation while walking on the beach and listening to the sound of the waves lapping on the shore. Deep breathing is another recognized way to reduce your stress and blood pressure, while also bringing much-needed oxygen to your body. Consider taking a class or workshop on meditation and/or breathing techniques to learn more. Getting a massage is also a great way to reduce stress while getting in some much needed self-care for your sore muscles at the same time. Reiki, or energy healing, is also a great way to reduce stress and bring your body into balance.
Seek Medical Attention As Needed
Whether for an acute illness or injury, or for a chronic condition, at one time or another we all need to seek medical attention. It’s important to recognize when you need help, and to know where you can go to get the help you need.
