We highly recommend renting a car while you're here on St. Croix.  Evaluate your style of vacation, and if you mostly want to stay in town then there are plenty of taxis to get you where you want to go. If you get the itch to explore, there are great open air taxis that will take you on a tour of the island and give you all the interesting facts and historical background. If you want to explore on your own, takes tours and visit local attractions, then we recommend that you rent a car! Outside of the towns, not many people walk around, so take into consideration where you are staying. Taxis can be expensive and difficult to get if you're outside of Christiansted or Frederiksted towns. Look into car rentals here.

It’s true, we drive on the left. We are one of the few places that drive on the left and historians are still arguing over why we do this. Don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it quickly because most of the roads are 2 lanes. For the most part, traffic travels at a slow to moderate pace. But, please remember to wear your seat belt! It’s the law.

While the Caribbean is generally thought of as being a tourist destination year round, there is certainly an off season, generally from July through late October. Travelling to St. Croix during off season offers both benefits and a few drawbacks for you to consider when planning your vacation. It comes down to better travel deals, different hours of operation, and less crowds.  Read more about what off season means here on St. Croix in our blog. 

The weather here is usually 88 degrees, mostly sunny, 10% chance of rain. This is the forecast most days for the Caribbean in general. But, the temperature does change, some days are rainy, and yes, some days are hotter than others. 

Hurricane season runs from June 1 until November 30, with the peak of season being between August and October. However, hurricanes can occur at any time during the season. The last two major hurricanes to hit St. Croix were Hugo in 1989 and Maria in 2017, both of which hit in September. Since then, strict guide lines have been put in place to protect everybody’s safety. With hourly updates and hi-tech satellite imagery, hurricanes don’t come without plenty of warning. Preparations are made well in advance of the storm.

U.S. citizens are not required to have a passport to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands. If you or someone you are traveling with do not have a passport, it is required that you present a government issued identification (such as a Driver's License) as well as an original copy of your birth certificate (with a raised seal). If you are not a U.S. citizen, but want to travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands, a valid passport from your country of origin is required.

If you are travelling with a minor, an ORIGINAL copy of the child’s birth certificate with a raised seal (a social security card will not suffice) AND a U.S. federal or state-issued photo identification document (such as a State ID, Military ID, Government ID, or CBP Trusted Traveler Card).  Please note that you must have photographic proof of identification for children as well as adults.
