Come sightseeing with Sweeny’s Safari Tours

We welcome you to St. Croix and are eager to teach you all about St. Croix’s history, cultural traditions, politics, botany, and more.  St. Croix Safari Tours is a destination management company offering rep services and transfers for groups of 4 to 25. I am Sweeny Toussaint, the owner and operator of St. Croix Safari Tours.  That’s me in the picture, driving one of  the open-air safari buses we use to show you around St. Croix, which has been my home for more than 30 years.

We have English, French, Spanish, and Danish speaking guides to narrate your tour.

Whether you are on a cruise ship and only here for the day, or staying a little while, our tours are a great way to see the island.  We have open-air, covered-top safari buses, or air-conditioned buses available for your comfort. All tours are narrated by the driver/guide, who will impress you with their knowledge about the island.

The Original Island Tour (perfect if staying on St. Croix)

Christiansted

The Town of Christiansted is considered “the most beautiful town in the West Indies.” The Historic District of Christiansted is full of character with tropical colors, Danish Caribbean architecture,  the beautifully restored government house, and a charming waterfront boardwalk that offers great shopping and restaurants.

Cruzan Rum

The Cruzan Rum Distillery has been producing the world’s finest rum since 1650.  The Nelthropp family continues the tradition of producing this high quality rum using only the purest, natural ingredients and process.  A  visit to the distillery will show you how Cruzan Rum is made.  After the tour you can enjoy the free samples at the visitor’s pavilion, and buy the many varieties of rum and merchandise directly from the source!

Frederiksted

The Town of Frederiksted is rich with history, and everywhere you look you can find it. The town has been nicknamed “Freedom City” because enslaved Africans forced Danish Authorities to declare their emancipation in 1848.

Botanical Gardens

The St. George Village Botanical Garden is on the grounds of an 18th century sugar plantation.  Smell the fragrance blooming in the tropical rainforest, witness the beauty and brilliant colors of orchids and hibiscus, see the drama of the cactus garden and learn from your guide the many medicinal uses of the plants.

Estate Whim

Whim Plantation Museum brings history to life. The stately greathouse welcomes you with gracious guides waiting to tell you the stories of the house and plantation life.  In the old kitchen, you can sample a traditional, homemade “johnny cake”.  The fully restored windmill and sugar factory ruins are open for you to explore.  You can even see sugar cane growing nearby in one of the plantation gardens.  The grounds are graced with tropical flowers, plants and trees.

Other sights along our safari tour: The Tropical Forest, Salt River National Park, the scenic North Shore where the views are breathtaking, and finally Carambola Golf Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, and built by Lawrence Rockefeller in 1966, is the recipient of Golf Magazine’s Gold Medal Award, and features The Terrace Restaurant and Pro Shop. Even if you don’t play golf, you’ll love the views!

The Christiansted Walking Tour

Take a walking tour through historic downtown Christiansted. Travel back in time to when sugar cane was king and Denmark made Christiansted a hub of the Danish West Indies and an important part of the Triangle Trade System of the seventeen and eighteen hundreds. Some of the historic buildings remain standing including Fort Christiansvaern, The Danish West India and Guinea Company warehouse, Customs House, Steeple Building, and many others. See where Alexander Hamilton, who’s face is printed on the American ten dollar bill, clerked before his migration to the US mainland where he became involved in politics. Visit Free Gut where the first free black community was established. Learn about life in the Danish West Indies as your tour guide takes you through the streets and arcades of this historic district. There will be plenty of photo opportunities along the way and a chance to sample some of our local food and drink.
